Forensic sleuthing in the age of invention

“Victorian CSI” —The Wall Street Journal

As seen on public television

Based on novels by Maureen Jennings

“A terrific procedural police drama” —The Philadelphia Inquirer

Smart and engaging, this award-winning mystery series centers on brilliant detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson, Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye), a pioneer of crime-solving technologies in Victorian Toronto. Still reeling from a personal and professional crisis, Murdoch has taken up gold prospecting at the start of Season 5. Soon he’s back in detective mode, helping a woman accused of murder; investigating an Egyptian curse; experimenting with time travel; and crossing paths with Jack London, Henry Ford, and his idol, Alexander Graham Bell. Meanwhile, Dr. Ogden (Gemini® winner Hélène Joy, Durham County) hires a feisty new coroner, Dr. Emily Grace (Georgina Reilly, The L.A. Complex), who catches the eye of Constable Crabtree (Jonny Harris, Hatching, Matching & Dispatching).

Guest stars include Aaron Ashmore (Smallville), Peter Keleghan (The Red Green Show), Matthew Bennett (Battlestar Galactica), Lisa Faulkner (Murder in Suburbia), and opera star Measha Brueggergosman.

Murdoch Mysteries Season 5 DVD Release Date Review :

By Kent L. Olsen “Puget Movies” (Seattle)
I’ve watched this series from the beginning and am impressed how the writing just keeps getting better. Very nice series.

By R. Watts (Anacortes, WA, USA)
I am always perplexed when something as good as the Murdoch Mysteries never shows up on American television. The mysteries are set in the late 1800s at a time when H.G.Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Nicola Tesla were alive and in their prime. Murdoch uses the latest (1800s) techniques to solve fairly complex crimes. All of the characters, from constable Crabtree to the Medical Examiner to the Irish chief of police are well developed and seem extraordinarily real. The series is well worth a watch, and by all means start with season 1.

By S. Beverly (Tennessee)
These are very enjoyable whodunit episodes that have the same bent towards highlighting a famous science figure from history and using their invention in their storyline. We’ve watched all we can get our hands on and are waiting for more.

By James Wasserman (Worthington, OH USA)
I have all the seasons produced so far and am looking forward to the release of season six. My wife and I find the level of acting and character development to be clearly superior to mcuh of what we find on TV today. I will keep buying the series as long as thfey produce it.

Join me as we journey through pregnancy together, keeping our bodies fit and healthy as we prepare to give birth.
MONTH 1: This is your first month of pregnancy. You’re likely to often feel tired. Together we’ll take it slow, listening to our bodies and finding our center.
MONTH 2: You’re starting to really feel your pregnancy now, and nausea may be an issue. We’ll work on range of motion, stretching and keeping our muscles strong and in proper alignment.
MONTH 3: We’ll tone and stretch with a range of arm and leg exercises. Plus we’ll continue to strengthen our abs while this is still a possibility.
MONTH 4: Hurray! You’re now entering your second trimester. Hopefully your nausea is gone. We’ll focus on lifting your butt and keeping you looking healthy.
MONTH 5: It’s month five, and your energy is back. We’ll continue to focus on lifting your butt, while we keep you moving and feeling strong—without overdoing it!
MONTH 6: You’re recognizably pregnant now. We’ll continue to keep you connected to your muscles, allowing your body to do what it needs for the pregnancy.
MONTH 7: You’re entering your third trimester. Your baby has grown a lot. Now we’ll concentrate on preparing our bodies for the birth. We’ll focus on circulation and staying strong and flexible.
MONTH 8: The baby is really growing. We’ll continue to move in order to keep our energy up and stay connected to our bodies, which are starting to feel a little foreign.
MONTH 9: We’re preparing for birth. The goal is to open up your hips. We’ll reduce the complexity of our movements but continue to work on circulation as we wait for our blessings to arrive.

By Jenn
I was doing metamorphosis when I found out I was pregnant I started this set of DVDs. The moves are easy and she goes much more slowly than her other DVDs. I am in my second trimester with my first baby and have only gained 7 pounds and I am still in non-maternity clothes. Doing the workout has helped keep my energy up and my joints from hurting. I can tell if I miss a workout day because my hips start to ache. Buy this now if you want a fit, easy pregnancy and a way to ensure your body will come back faster after delivery.

Tracy Anderson The Pregnancy Project DVD Release Date Review :

By Mrs S
I ordered this DVD directly from Tracey Anderson’s website in November 2011 so I believe it’s the same as this one to be released on Amazon in 2013.
This DVD is brilliant. I love it. I am already fit and exercise about 4 times a week with intense cardio, cycling, weights and pilates. Tracey understands what is appropriate for someone who was fit before pregnancy and wants to continue exercising safely. There is no cardio per se – it’s all strength training, but it does get your heart rate up.

For me this DVD is perfect because I do a special prenatal exercise twice a week (fitball cardio and weights), one pilates class, then I can just do this DVD once a week or when I can’t make it to class.

PROS:
* Tracey is kind and encouraging. She cues the exercises clearly and doesn’t talk too much. It’s great that she is actually pregnant in this video.
* The environment that she exercises in is pleasant and you can turn the background music off if you just want Tracey’s voice.
* 1 DVD for each month makes sense as your body changes so much each month, as do the rules about what you can and can’t do.
* All the exercises feel ‘right’ to me. Nothing feels strange or unsafe. I trust the exercises to be safe in pregnancy. There is no lying on your back or traditional ab work.
* There are little interviews and extras about common issues in pregnancy which I really enjoyed watching. You hear from other (famous) mothers and an obstetrician and they all seem to give very good and encouraging advice.
* It really works to help keep your legs, butt, arms, shoulders and upper back strong. My muscles are (pleasantly) sore the next day. The exercises work your abs indirectly to help you keep a strong core.
* I find it helps relieve and reduce my lower back tightness and pain. I enjoy the workout and look forward to doing it at the end of a stressful work day sitting in an office chair all day.

CONS:
* If you’re unfit, you might find this a bit tough, but definitely give it a try as it’s so important to exercise during pregnancy.
* On the other hand, this DVD alone would probably not be enough exercise for me or for someone who is fit. I think it works best if you combine it with some other activities, like a class, or some walking/swimming – but then again I’m not usually an exercise DVD person!

Highly recommended!

Diana Vreeland The Eye Has to Travel DVD Release Date Review :

By LKP (Ancram, NY)
A day or two after I saw this film, I was still grinning. Diana Vreeland, not unlike Auntie Mame, understood that life really IS a banquet. She was one of those remarkable “People Who Notice”; and through her unquenchable curiosity and enthusiasm she made us notice too. When I was a young person, growing up in Blue Collar USA, I scraped together allowance money to buy Vogue. It widened my horizons, and affirmed my urge to get to the Big City and become part of an urban creative environment. No mere “fashion rag”, the exuberance and style of Vogue magazine represented a wider world – a place where anything could happen. Watching this film, we get to eavesdrop on that unique/lavish period in publishing, where boundaries were expanded, ideas flourished, and that giddy sense of “Why NOT?!” was rampant. This film covers her whole life (not just the years at Vogue) and it is a wonderfully-conceived cultural Time Capsule – with crisp, fast-paced editing, and a wealth of captivating images. Best of all, it is a marvelous, rollicking and thoughtful look at a singular Woman Of Influence. I enjoyed this film for dozens of reasons!

By Art (USA)
This is one of those films that makes you feel good. A brilliant woman, and delightfully eccentric, her impact on the fashion world (and beyond) is legendary. The film has several interviews with her and does a wonderful job telling the story of her life and career. The pace dips a little towards the end, but not enough to detract from this wonderful film. Diana is so captivating, full of energy, brilliant, and fun (albeit a tough cookie). Watching this film, there were several times I thought “I need to remember that quote!” Visually, the film is an absolute treat, and I highly recommend the book by the same name if you want a coffee table version of this movie. Bottom line, I would love to have lunch with Diana Vreeland… but since that is not possible this is the next best option.

I was hoping to give it as Christmas gifts, but they are not releasing it until February… which is too bad because this would have made wonderful stocking stuffers (Chanel stockings, of course!)

Mystery Science Theater 3000 XXVI DVD Release Date Review :

By Valnastar “Man With No Name” (Deep 13, USA)
This latest MST3K DVD set features one episode with show creator Joel Hodgson as host and three with head writer Mike Nelson as host. Three episodes are from the Comedy Central era of the show while the fourth is from the first season on the Sci-Fi Channel. It’s quite a good selection of episodes with some movies that are fun and entertaining in their own way even before the riffing starts. Of course, MST3K makes them way more fun.

411- THE MAGIC SWORD
This 1962 color film from Bert I. Gordon is certainly one of his best and it’s actually a fairly fun and well made fantasy film aimed at younger audiences. It features a fine cast including Basil Rathbone, Estelle Winwood and Gary Lockwood. Entertaining as it is on its own it still makes for a terrific and hilarious episode of MST3K. In fact the endless fantasy elements and bits of intentional humor in the film work exceedingly and surprisingly well as fodder for jokes on the Satellite Of Love. A beautiful princess (Anne Helm) is kidnapped by an evil wizard (Rathbone) and a young man (Lockwood) raised by a kind sorceress (Winwood) is determined to rescue her. There’s even a quite decent looking dragon in the film. The riffing is constant, unending fun during this one and as an added bonus one of the host segments features Crow T. Robot declaring his love for Estelle Winwood in song. There’s no better example than this to show that MST3K worked just as well with a decent film as it did making fun of a terrible one. I’ve been wanting this one on DVD for years and am excited to see it finally get released.

516- ALIEN FROM L.A.
This 1988 Golan Globus color film is a comedy action update loosely based on Jules Verne’s Journey To The Center Of The Earth starring Kathy Ireland. However lovely and attractive model Kathy Ireland is the fact that she is not an experienced or trained actress shows clearly in every frame of the film. This of course leads to many wonderful jokes at her expense. The film is quite goofy and in some cases deliberately so, but the low budget production with its silly script can’t escape the wrath of the writers at MST3K. The musical host segment “Wild Irish Ireland” is charming and extremely funny. There’s also a host segment quiz about the many yet few facial expressions of Kathy Ireland in the film that is quite funny. Great riffing throughout.

620- DANGER! DEATH RAY
Poorly made James Bond knock-offs were all the rage in 1967 when this Italian spy flick was released with former Tarzan actor Gordon Scott as agent Bart Fargo (really!) trying to track down a stolen “death ray”. Oddly, the maker of the death ray declares at the beginning of the film that it was built “only for peaceful purposes” which is a good laugh right there for something referred to as a “death ray” even before the MST3K writers latch onto it as they do for some great riffing and an entire host segment! Like Secret Agent Super Dragon and Operation Double 007 before it the crew of the Satellite Of Love give us yet another hilarious episode making fun of a terrible attempt to cash in on the James Bond film craze. This is one off the better episodes from MST3K season 6.

803- THE MOLE PEOPLE
Wow, another classic Universal horror picture finally makes it to MST3K DVD release. John Agar stars in this 1956 black-and-white film about a subterranean civilization that enslaves the bug-eyed mole people who share their underground world. This movie was shown endlessly on UHF TV stations back in the 1960s and 1970s and I was thrilled when MST3K had the chance to make fun of it in their first year on the Sci-Fi Channel. MST3K had been referring to this movie from its earliest days with “mole people” working for Dr. Forrester in Deep 13 so getting a crack at the actual film must have been quite fun. This episode features MST3K’s first guest star ever, NFL player Robert Smith. It’s a fun outing as MST3K returns to making fun of its core film genre, low budget science fiction.

Extra features include:
- Bert I. Gordon: The Amazing Colossal Filmmaker, a new interview with “The Magic Sword” director Bert I. Gordon by Ballyhoo
- Of Mushrooms and Madmen: Making The Mole People, a documentary by Ballyhoo
- A new interview With “Alien From L.A.” director Albert Pyun.
- Life After MST3K: Mike Nelson.

By Baruch Weiss “Baruch” (Chicago IL)
Well here it is, the last volume containing the last episodes of this classic animated TV show!! How appropriate that the artwork is the warner siblings in their tower as if it’s about to close up for good. I am really looking forward to this set as I have not seen some of these episodes since they aired on nickelodeon over 10 years ago except this time, the theme song will be intact and dot’s last line won’t be dubbed from here’s the show’s namey to nickalaney, it is so awesome that Animaniacs fans will finally be abel to complete their set & hopefully introduce them to a whole new generation of fans as well. It’s just a shame that there won’t be any bonus features or Wakko’s Wish for that matter (although that might get it’s own DVD release someday) but all that matters is the finale episodes of this classic TV show will be released and that’s special enough.

By Austin
IT’S FINALLY HERE!!! ANIMANIACS VOLUME 4!!! CONTAINS THE REMAINING 24 EPISODES OF THE SERIES!!! HOPEFULLY WARNER BROS WILL RELEASE WAKKO’S WISH ON DVD EVENTUALLY BUT THIS IS STILL VERY AWESOME!!!

By Rave Mystery
As soon as I heard that Warner bros. was finally going to release the final volume of this classic Emmy winning series I had to come on here and write a review. I loved this show since I was a kid and have collected the first 3 sets now I can finally complete my collection with the the fourth and final box set. Animaiacs fans every can finally complete there collections and share them a new generation of fans.

The TARDIS arrives near Paris during the French Revolution a time of great upheaval bloodshed and terror. Soon with the Doctor trapped inside a burning farmhouse Ian imprisoned and Susan and Barbara on their way to the guillotine it’s clear this will be one of their most dangerous and exciting adventures yet

By David F. Humphrey “David” (San Diego, Ca)
I love this 6 part story because it is just history and not Sci-Fi. When Doctor Who started it was an educational program!! The Doctor and companions traveled back in time as a fun way for kids to learn and see historical events ie.: The Aztecs, the rein of terror in France, Marco Polo (which I hope will be next to be animated.) King Richard The Lion Hearted ect. ect., also to teach them a bit about science too which is why Willian Hartnel often times sounds like a college professor. This all stopped with the Second Doctor Patrick Troughton I believe The Highlanders where we meet long running companion Jammie McCrimmon was the last straight historic story with no aliens or monsters.

As for the BBC having found the original audio tracks for the 2 missing episodes (4. The Tyrant of France and 5. A Bargain of Necessity) it’s thanks to kids who recorded the audio on reel to reels and the new cassette tapes that we have the audio. On of the bonus features for the Partick Troughton story The Invasion (The first Doctor Who to have animated episodes filling in the missing ones) goes into details about how they cleaned up and spliced together different audio sources to get the best quality they could. If you get the missing episodes cd set these home made recordings are the soundtrack you’re listening too same with the loose cannon reconstructions

I say a giant three cheers to the BBC for working hard to satisfy the fans and get these lost storylines to us devoted fans I can’t wait for more in the future!

Doctor Who The Reign of Terror DVD Release Date Review :

By Happy Reader (Northern California)
The Doctor is trying to land in England, but ends up in the woods outside of Paris. More to the point, it is 1794 Paris. The French Revolution is five years old and Queen Guillotine reigns. In spite of finding period clothing to change into (Ian comments on Barbara’s transformation with, “Hairstyle’s a bit modern, but it’s all right.”), it doesn’t take them long to get into trouble. Susan, Ian and Barbara find themselves arrested and taken to the infamous Conciergerie prison to await their turn at the guillotine. The Doctor gets separated and ends up on a road gang.

Fortunately, our travelers, in more than one place, stumble onto an escape chain. But it is not that easy to get anyone out of Paris, even with the chaos that is still France, and it will be a close shave (heh heh). Spies and turncoats from both sides operate on secrecy and paranoia. But how often do you get to meet a world figure such as Napoleon?

This is a review of the January 2013 1-disc DVD release of “The Reign of Terror”, the first time the full serial has been released on DVD. It was considered a “lost serial” until the 1980′s when copies of the video for episodes 1, 2, 3 and 6 were recovered from stations in Malta and Cyprus and a private collector. A VHS was released in 2003 with narration by Carole Ford (who plays Susan) linking episodes 3 and 6.

For this DVD release, however, the BBC is including animated versions of episodes 4 & 5. And, from what I can find, they did recover the full original audio of episodes 4 & 5, so the animation will be matched with the voices of William Hartnell, et al.

Back in June, 2011, the animation studio issued these releases, which make me hopeful the animation will be pretty good. The animation used will be “a totally new style of animation, a hybrid of the classic anime styles of the 80s and high-technology”.
“We are now two days into production. After a fantastic preproduction period, images are pouring out of the studio. Meticulous research has been done, even involving the help of Paris University’s Archaeology Department to get some of the period features, which do not appear in the extant episodes, correct. 3D models of every set used have been built as guides for our artists. Model sheets of the main characters and key backgrounds are now being painted. There’s a fantastic buzz surrounding the project. Every member of the team is focused on getting detail and accuracy to the highest possible level.”

This is a decent episode of Dr. Who, which originally aired in August/September 1964. The show has six 25-minute episodes. I take a star off because there isn’t much science fiction in the tale. This is just my opinion – it’s a historical show and has nice twists and turns to the plot, but it’s still not science fiction and the driving force behind the plot is nothing more than an escape thriller. The only science-fiction-y moment is when Barbara says that she learned her lesson about trying to change the future in “The Aztecs”.

Extras announced, so far, to be included on the DVD:
1. Commentary on all six episodes. Moderated by Toby Hadoke. Commentators include Carole Ann Ford (plays Susan), Neville Smith (plays D’Argenson, a counterrevolutionary), Jeffrey Wickham (plays Webster, Ian’s English cellmate), Caroline Hunt (plays Danielle), Patrick Marley (plays a soldier), Timothy Coombe (production assistant) and Ronald Pickup (plays a physician). In addition, Paul Vanezis and Philip Morris talk about the search for the missing episodes.
If you’re interested, the sfx.co.uk website has an April, 2012, article that I found fun and interesting. It’s about how some recent commentaries have been recorded for Doctor Who, including photos of studio sessions. You can find it by googling “Doctor Who: Recording The DVD Commentaries”.
2. “Don’t Lose Your Head – The Making of the Reign of Terror” (25 minutes)
3. “The Reign of Terror – Photo Gallery”
4. “The Reign of Terror – Animation Gallery
5. Trailer (1 minute)

An all-new chapter in the Battlestar Galactica saga, Blood & Chrome takes place in the midst of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, the sentient robotic Cylons, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a young, talented fighter pilot, William Adama (Luke Pasqualino, The Borgias), finds himself assigned to one of the most powerful battlestars in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica. Though Adama quickly finds himself at odds with his co-pilot, the battle-weary officer Coker (Ben Cotton, Alcatraz), the two men must set their differences aside when a routine escort mission with an enigmatic passenger (Lili Bordán, Silent Witness) turns dangerous and becomes a pivotal one for the desperate fleet.

The DVD features a special Unrated version of the film and bonus features including deleted scenes and the featurette “Blood & Chrome: Visual Effects,” where you can discover how the ground-breaking use of visual effects brought the world of Battlestar Galactica to life like you’ve never seen before!

By coolcrazyindian (Gallatin Tn)
Hay out there fellow SiFiers,, AS I said, I’m old school SiFi . I was there when it all started over 20 yrs. ago. I’m FRANKIN #@%$! about what has happen to our beloved SIFI channel, I have a wide range of SiFi series that came out from the SIFI channel and love every one of them. Sliders,Babylon 5,Earth Final Conflict,Earth 2,just to name a few.I mean you can’t even chatch these series on reruns on the SiFI channel. So I bought all of them.I grew up watchen B rated movies on Sat.s,Star Trek and StarBlazers , I remeber them all, when I heard that there was a channel coming out that was dedicated to everything SiFi I was not only blown away, I WAS GEEKED!!Yes I would like to see a new series of Battlestar Galactica and see the SiFi channel get back on track, but you know as long as they got that bunch of PANY WASTE running the the show, it’ll never happen.!!I’m hard core SiFi and Treker and proud of it !!
By D. Keeley
Being a child of the ’70s I went in to the “new” Galactica wanting to hate it. It quickly became what I consider one of the best TV series ever made, of any genre. Blood and chrome is a continuation of the legacy. It’s a little rough around the edges and I’ll put the blame where it’s due; the staff of what used to be called “The Sci Fi Channel”. News of Blood and Chrome and a short teaser of the same leaked out, most likely forcing them to allow it to be shown. It was done with little budget and support from the network but in spite of that they did an outstanding job. Seeing the actors that had previously played in Galactica playing different roles in this film, knowing they wouldn’t make much money off of it, tells me they enjoyed the work they do, and it shows. If you haven’t see the new Galactica, check it out in its entirety, followed by Razor and The Plan, then check this one out.

By peterock87
After the mistake that was Caprica the SyFy channel owes us a great series like this. If the 5 minutes of preview is a realistic representation of the movie it really is a no brainer, turn it into a series.
